The Job:
The Comptroller acts as NYC’s fiscal watchdog and officer, with oversight and auditing power over all NYC agencies. The Comptroller manages the city’s vast pension funds, with $240 billion in assets. The office approves of all litigation settlements, makes recommendations regarding proposed contracts, markets and sells municipal bonds, and manages city debt. The office also plays a critical role in ensuring that the Mayor and Council act according to sound fiscal principles when creating the City’s budget.
What’s at stake:
New York City faces an overall affordability crisis. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, with so many small businesses shuttered and tax revenue down and increased evictions looming, sound fiscal oversight is the only way to ensure the city’s recovery.
