Statement from LID President Jared Arader on the passing of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg
Back in law school, every time one of her cases came up, joy fell over the entire class. Everyone was engaged in the discussion, everyone was excited to discuss a Ruth Bader Ginsberg opinion. Her jurisprudence was more than just good writing: it was true justice and equality, especially for women and marginalized people. We knew we were reading real American history, from a true trailblazer. Personally I’m devastated. As an attorney and political activist, I’m scared.
4 years ago, her friend Justice Antonin Scalia died months earlier in the election cycle than we are now. Mitch McConnell refused to consider the nomination of his replacement because of the impending election. There is no chance in hell that Mitch will honor his own rule now.
Senator Schumer and Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee have to do everything they can do to stonewall, push back, delay and obstruct. Use the process to ensure that we don’t lose the Supreme Court for an entire generation.
We don’t have to be fucked.
