This year, LID is proud to present the Brooklyn Lambda Award to leaders and partners who have made significant contributions to Brooklyn’s LGBTQ Community, advancing our cause and interests.

In honor of their retirement and significant contributions over their careers, LID is proud to present this award to Representatives Jerry Nadler and Nydia Velazuez. With a combined 66 years in Congress, they have advanced and championed countless progressive causes and have never shied away from supporting LGBTQ interests, long before many of their Democratic colleagues were doing so. Jerry’s Congressional career is one that never slowed down, and he has gained the national spotlight as a progressive champion spearheading two impeachments against Donald Trump. Nydia isn’t nicknamed “La Luchadora” among her constituents for no reason: as the first Hispanic woman in both Congress and on the New York City Council, she has always put her constituents first - including Brooklyn’s long-standing LGBTQ communities in Brownstone and North Brooklyn.

Our awards not only honor those who have tenured service records, but also those up-and-coming leaders who are actively working to make the world safer and more inclusive for our community. This year, we are presenting the Brooklyn Lambda Award to Trans formative Schools, a progressive education community centering trans children, educators and their families. TfS operates a free afterschool program catering toward the needs of trans, queer and nonbinary students and is expanding into curriculum and professional development. With conservatives working hard to make our schools a hostile place for trans and nonbinary students, we need more partners like TfS to thrive, and we are proud to honor their achievements this year.

Named for LID’s founding present, the Peter Vogel Award recognizes outstanding leadership within our club. Joseph Jourdan served as LID’s President from 2024-26, holding roles as Recording Secretary and Treasurer before that. Joe has worked full-time in politics his entire professional life, currently serving as Press Secretary for NYC Small Business Services. He has worked on numerous election campaigns for Democrats throughout the country, including Hillary for America and Assembly Member Jo Anne Simon’s campaign for Brooklyn Borough President. Joe is never one to hold back his carefully-crafted political advice, and is willing to dive deep into local statistics and polling. We’re proud to have Joe as one of our own.
