Why do you want to represent your neighbors and fellow Brooklynites in Washington? (100 words max)
I want to continue representing Brooklyn because my work isn’t finished. In my first two terms, I have delivered real results for our communities—securing the largest federal infrastructure grant ever awarded to NYCEDC to revitalize the Brooklyn Marine Terminal, helping save the Empire Wind 1 offshore wind project and hundreds of union jobs, and delivering millions of dollars in capital funding for NYCHA. Even in the minority, I have passed legislation to advance resiliency projects and massively expand federal funding for affordable housing. I am running to keep delivering for Brooklyn families and fighting for a more affordable, just, and resilient future.
What difference will you make for your community? (100 words max)
Constituent services and quality-of-life advocacy have been central to my work in Congress, especially for Brooklyn communities in my district. Over the past three-plus years, my district team has closed nearly 7,000 constituent cases and returned over $10 million directly to residents by resolving issues with federal agencies such as the IRS, Social Security Administration, Treasury Department, and Small Business Administration. Our Sunset Park district office has become a critical resource for immigrant families and Brooklyn residents seeking help with housing, food assistance, and NYCHA issues. Through community partnerships, mobile office hours, and neighborhood outreach, my office will continue ensuring Brooklynites can access the federal resources and support they deserve.
How will you support and empower the LGBTQ+ community, particularly at a time when transgender people are under sustained attack from the Trump Administration? (100 words max)
I am proud to be an ally to the LGBTQ+ community and a member of the Equality Caucus. During my time as Congressman, I have aggressively stood up for trans kids, hosted roundtables to address the health inequities facing the LGBTQ+ community, and provided resources to many leading organizations. I recently joined colleagues to re-raise the Pride flag at the Stonewall National Monument, and introduced legislation to prevent it from being taken down. I will always aggressively fight for LGBTQ+ organizations and communities.
How will you support and empower Brooklynites being targeted by ICE? (100 words max)
I have taken an all-of-the-above approach to protecting Brooklyn’s immigrant communities from abusive ICE enforcement. I have introduced a number of bills to rein in ICE, filed a successful lawsuit allowing me to conduct oversight of detention facilities at 26 Federal Plaza, and established a rapid-response triage center in my district office to support families whose loved ones are detained. Working with organizations like Make the Road New York, the New York Immigration Coalition, and New Sanctuary Coalition, we connect families with legal assistance and resources—efforts that have already helped secure the release of 26 detainees. My Sunset Park office also serves as a safe space offering Know Your Rights training and direct support to immigrant families.
Who did you endorse in the 2025 Mayoral Election, in both the primary and the general election? (100 words max)
In the 2025 mayoral primary, I supported State Senator Zellynor Myrie, a strong champion for Brooklyn and for housing affordability. In the general election, I did not endorse a candidate. With the election now behind us, I have proactively reached out to Mayor Mamdani to work together on key priorities, including universal childcare, the Department of Community Safety, and fare-free buses. I look forward to continuing that partnership because when the Mayor succeeds, all New Yorkers succeed.
Although you are running for a federal legislative position, we recognize that our federal elected officials have an important voice in local political communities. With that in mind, do you/will you support the Brooklyn Can’t Wait slate of District Leader candidates and Brooklyn Can’t Wait’s reforms to make our local party more accountable, transparent, inclusive, and effective? (100 words max)
I strongly support efforts to improve accountability, transparency, inclusivity, and effectiveness within our local Democratic Party. Grassroots engagement and responsive party leadership are essential to building trust and strengthening our democratic institutions. At the same time, I believe endorsements should follow thoughtful engagement. Before formally supporting any candidate or slate, I make it a priority to meet with the individuals involved, hear their perspectives, and understand their plans for serving the community. I look forward to engaging with the Brooklyn Can’t Wait candidates and learning more about their proposals and vision for reform.
Legislation/Congressional Action:
Do you support impeaching Donald Trump and Kristi Noem? Are you open to impeaching other federal officials, as circumstances warrant?
Yes, this administration has committed numerous impeachable offenses. As the lead counsel on the first Trump investigation, I am especially well equipped to take on these battles. Based on that experience, it is essential that we first conduct investigations to expose the misconduct before we decide to move forward with impeachment. But if impeachment is warranted, I support moving forward with it, even if we know that the Senate will not convict anyone in our partisan era.
What other steps will you take as a member of Congress to hold the Trump Administration accountable for its actions?
First and foremost, accountability should mean action. Not only should we use every legal avenue to pursue Trump and the members of his administration who have openly and flagrantly violated the law, but we need to reform our system so that it is not so open to abuse in the future. For example, given the Supreme Court’s decision essentially granting the President total immunity for actions taken while in office, we as Congress need to pass more stringent laws that make it explicitly clear that no person, especially the President, is above the law or immune from prosecution as it relates to ignoring the will of Congress or depriving Americans of their rights. Transparency brings accountability and I will use my seniority in Congress and experience as an investigator to lead that effort. Fundamentally, we must ensure that our nation addresses the wrongdoings of Donald Trump and does not brush them under the rug once we take power, while also taking action to ensure one like him can never come to power again. But we must also focus on addressing the issues that are hurting everyday Americans, such as health care, childcare, and housing.
Do you support the abolition of ICE? Will you commit to not supporting any federal spending bill that continues the Trump Administration’s repressive deportation campaign?
Yes, ICE must be abolished.
Do you support the Equality Act (HR 15)?
Yes
Do you support an end to American financial aid to Israel’s military? If not, are there any conditions you would put on that aid?
As a democratic ally in a region filled with terrorist groups intent on the destruction of western democracy, I believe we need to support Israel against terrorists and work towards safety, security and self-determination for all communities in the region, especially the Palestinian people. I cannot commit to a blanket ban on aid to Israel that is divorced from circumstance, especially in light of Iran’s stated aim of eradicating Israel (and the United States), which jeopardizes Israel’s safety and security.
That being said, I strongly oppose Israel’s current government, especially the way they carried out the war in Gaza and settlement expansion in the West Bank. We must take a hard look at how our aid is being used to carry out the devastation of these areas, and ensure the safety of both the Palestinians and Israelis. Just as Donald Trump is not synonymous with the United States, Benjamin Netanyahu is not synonymous with Israel, which will have an election this year. I’m a progressive Zionist who’s always used my voice to speak up against injustice – like
the settlement land grabs in the West Bank and lack of humanitarian aid in Gaza – and I’m honored to be endorsed by J Street, a leading pro-peace advocacy group pushing for a two-state solution.
The last few years have highlighted deep and systematic challenges to our democracy. If elected to Congress, what steps will you take and what actions would you support to fundamentally reform our system of government to get closer to a truly egalitarian, democratic republic? Examples may include expanding the Supreme Court, expanding the House, adding new states (e.g. Washington DC), moving to a national popular vote, etc? Do you agree that we need fundamental reform?
There are many distinct campaigns for change that we must pursue to revitalize our democracy and unrig our system. First and foremost on the list is addressing the rapidly spiraling crisis of wealth inequality, which will require structural reforms across the economy.
On an institutional level, the Supreme Court needs wholesale change. That includes court expansion over time, term limits for justices, and significant ethics reform for members of the Court. To that end, as a member of the Judiciary Committee, I would continue to push for my Supreme Court Ethics and Investigations Act, which would establish an office of ethics counsel to advise justices, and concurrently, establish an independent investigations office to oversee any conflicts of interests, recusals, and other ethical matters involving members of the Court. Such an office would report to Congress on its findings and recommend remedies to the Chief Justice. This reform is desperately needed given the crisis of trust in the Court, and the many flagrant ethical violations of some of its justices. As I have stated many times, the highest court in the land cannot have the lowest of ethical standards.
Another deeply needed reform that I will continue to push for is Rep. Morelle’s constitutional amendment to end absolute immunity for the President. In July of 2024, the Supreme Court invented an ahistorical absolute criminal immunity that shields past, current, and future presidents from equal justice under the law. The danger of this precedent must be curtailed—no American president, Democrat or Republican, should be absolutely immune from criminal prosecution. In our nation, where every person is created equal, nobody is above the law.
I also firmly believe Washington, DC deserves equal representation in our federal government as its own state. Similarly, Puerto Rico deserves that opportunity as well, if it so chooses.
In terms of federal elections, a national popular vote for president is another deeply needed reform. The United States is one, if not the only, western democracy that does not directly vote for its chief executive – either through party or individual. This must change. The electoral college is antiquated and creates resentment and lack of real representation in our democracy. People, not states, deserve to choose their president. I am supportive of the effort to have states pass laws agreeing to designate their electors to the winner of the popular vote.
Additionally, we must find ways to make voting more accessible to Americans. That is why I introduced the Early Voting Act, which would require at least a 14-day window of in-person early voting for federal elections across the country as well as much easier access to polling precincts. We must make voting as easy and accessible as possible.
Although this is not directly tied to structural democracy, the rising wealth inequality in our country is undermining our democratic values. That’s why I introduced the Robinhood Act to make billionaires pay their fair share. When Elon Musk is paying a 3% effective tax rate and Jeff Bezos pays only 1%, the system is broken. My bill would eliminate a common tax-avoidance scheme used by billionaires that would generate nearly $30 billion of revenue per year so that we can pay for universal childcare, Medicare for All, and other essential programs to give everyone access to the American Dream.
