Endorsements so far: Working Families Party, SEIU 32BJ, Tenants PAC, Central Brooklyn Independent Democrats, Jim Owles Liberal Democratic Club

Why do you want to represent your neighbors and fellow Brooklynites in Albany? (100 words max) It has been the honor of my lifetime to have had the privilege to serve as the Assemblymember of the 44th District.  I was elected in 2016 and have been re-elected 5 times since. I was born and raised in the neighborhoods in my district. I am a progressive and passionate advocate with a reputation as a creative problem solver. These skills have led to me passing 35 bills through the legislature with 25 becoming law. I have been a leader on the environment, education, transportation, election reform and criminal justice reform during my time in the assembly. I’m proud to have always run with the support of LID and hope to do so again this year.

What difference will you make for your community? (100 words max)

As someone who has served in the Assembly for ten years, I am proud of my record of service to all the communities that make up the 44th Assembly District.  Through advocacy, legislation, budget initiatives, and constituent services we have been able to do a lot of amazing things for the people I have the honor of representing and for New Yorkers across the City and State. With your support I hope to continue this work in my next term.

How will you support and empower the LGBTQ+ community, particularly at a time when transgender people are under sustained attack from the Trump Administration? (100 words max)

I have a long-term relationship with LID Brooklyn, Stonewall Dems, Jim Owles Liberal Democratic Club, and my partnership with BILO (Brooklyn Irish LGBTQ Organization) helped bring the inclusion of the first openly LGBTQ organization to the Brooklyn Irish American Day Parade in 2019, which takes place in my district. This is something I am very proud of.  On the legislative front, books by LGBTQ+ themes have been frequent targets of censorship.  As the Chair of the Libraries and Education Technology Committee, I introduced two bills to prevent censorship in public and school libraries.  Additionally, and most recently, I joined colleagues in a letter to call on NYU Langone Health to continue to provide gender affirming care for youth. On the community front I am proud to support Trans-visibility events in my district that are sponsored by Parents of Gender expansive kids and others.

How will you support and empower Brooklynites being targeted by I.C.E? (100 words max) I strongly support the New York for All Act and oppose ICE’s harmful and unlawful conduct. This past September I was arrested with several of my colleagues in government when we sought access to where ICE has been holding people at 26 Federal Plaza. I have introduced legislation

(A.9269) clarifying the Governor’s power to effectuate emergency disconnections of utilities when state laws are being violated and believe that such action should be taken to stop ICE’s illegal actions if necessary. I have also introduced A9300, the “free speech protection act”; which would prohibit state and local law enforcement agencies from cooperating with federal agencies in the surveillance of activities protected by the First Amendment such as demonstrations and protests.

Who did you endorse in the 2025 Mayoral Election, in both the primary and the general election? (100 words max).

I endorsed Brad Lander #1 and Zohran Mamadani #2 in the primary and Zohran Mamdani in the general election.

Although you are running for a state legislative position, we recognize that our state elected officials have an important voice in local political communities. With that in mind, do you/will you support the Brooklyn Can’t Wait slate of District Leader candidates and Brooklyn Can’t Wait’s reforms to make our local party more accountable, transparent, inclusive, and effective? (100 words max).

Yes. I am a longtime supporter of this effort. My District Leaders’s are running with Brooklyn Can’t Wait’s support.

Similarly, we recognize that our state elected officials have an important voice in national political dialogue as well. How will you use your voice to speak out about ending US support for the genocide in Gaza and putting a stop to the aggression being implemented by the Trump Administration against Venezuela, Greenland, and other areas? (100 words max)

I have spoken out on all of these issues in various ways and will continue to do so.
