LID Applauds Creation of NYC LGBTQIA+ Affairs Office Led by First Transgender Department Head
Lambda Independent Democrats of Brooklyn (LID Brooklyn) applauds Mayor Zohran Mamdani for signing an executive order establishing the New York City Mayor’s Office of LGBTQIA+ Affairs, a historic step to strengthen coordination, advocacy, and services for LGBTQIA+ New Yorkers.
Mayor Mamdani also announced the appointment of civil rights attorney Taylor Brown as the inaugural director of the new office. Brown’s appointment makes her the first openly transgender person to lead a New York City government office or agency, marking a significant milestone for representation in city government.
The new office will coordinate LGBTQIA+ initiatives across city agencies, ensure that policies protect LGBTQIA+ residents from discrimination, and strengthen engagement between City Hall and community organizations serving LGBTQIA+ communities.
The announcement was made at the Brooklyn Pride Center, underscoring the city’s commitment to working in partnership with LGBTQIA+ community organizations and recognizing Brooklyn’s long history as a center of LGBTQIA+ activism and organizing.
As the oldest LGBTQIA+ Democratic club in New York City, our members have seen firsthand how representation in City Hall can transform policy and improve lives. This is a historic moment for LGBTQIA+ leadership in city government. At a time when LGBTQIA+ people, especially transgender people, are facing coordinated attacks across the country, state, and even within the city, , New York City must continue to lead with policies that affirm dignity, safety, and equality.
LID Brooklyn looks forward to working with Director Brown and the Mamdani administration to advance policies that strengthen equity, protect civil rights, and ensure New York City remains a national leader in LGBTQIA+ inclusion.
