Lambda Independent Democrats of Brooklyn Stands with NY Taxi Workers and their Allies

On October 25, 2021, NYTWA members and allies, including representatives Shahana Hanif and Carlos Menchaca, were arrested outside city hall on Day 6 of the 25,000-member strong union’s hunger strike. The NYTWA is demanding Mayor DeBlasio add a city-backed guarantee to the taxi medallion debt relief plan. NYC taxi drivers have been devastated by unpayable medallion debt due to neglect and mismanagement of priorities under the DeBlasio administration. Further, the impact of these severe financial stressors have contributed to a mental health crisis among taxi drivers. Some have lost their life to suicide. Even as they persist a week into the hunger strike, Mayor DeBlasio refuses to meet with them.
