We Can’t Afford Lee Zeldin

We owe it to members of our community who have fought alongside us since Stonewall to keep Lee Zeldin out of office.

The polls close at 9. If you have not yet voted, we’d like to let you know what’s at stake for LGBTQ New Yorkers.

Trump’s hand-picked GOP candidate for Governor, Rep. Lee Zeldin, has:

  • Proposed prohibiting teachers from addressing questions about sexual orientation up through 7th grade, which is more restrictive than the “Don’t Say Gay” law enacted in Florida by homophobe Gov. Ron DeSantis.  

  • Supported Trump’s efforts to roll back President Obama’s protections for transgender students in school bathrooms, implying in a social media post that transgender women are only looking for an “excuse” to enter a girls’ restroom.  

  • Voted against Same Sex Marriage as a New York State Senator in 2011.  

  • Voted against the Equality Act in 2019 and 2021.  

  • Supported banning Transgender service members from serving openly.

Get it?  Lee Zeldin will use everything in his power as Governor of New York State to target transgender New Yorkers.  

Lee Zeldin has said that he will not roll back abortion protections in New York only because the state legislature is securely Democratic (a fact which is not a given unless we keep fighting to keep it that way).  Do we want a governor who will only agree not to do something because he cannot?  But the Governor has executive powers beyond the reach of the legislature - and we should fear how he will use them to target our community.  

We owe it to members of our community who have fought alongside us since Stonewall to keep Lee Zeldin out of office.
