Why I Volunteer

Dear LID Family,

Most people don’t want to do it. Many people dread it. The idea of cold-calling complete strangers is daunting. The easiest thing to do is come up with good excuses why you can’t do it.

But this year, we have no choice. With all LGBTQ members of the City Council term limited, it’s our obligation to ensure our representation continues and our voices are heard.

That’s where volunteering comes in. We have to reach out directly to voters.

Once you start the work, it’s addicting. Most of your calls won’t pick up. Some won’t want to talk to you. But if you can get just one interested person during the phone bank, and have the opportunity to really chat with them about the candidates we care about, it will be well worth it.

None of us are “too busy” to help out our candidates. Our candidates need our help to get elected - and we need to do the work to ensure quality LGBTQ representation in our city.

LID has created a resource for campaign volunteers every day of the week. Feel free to sign up for one of these events in order to volunteer to phone-bank or canvass safely in-person with fellow LID members any day of the week. Our volunteer page is available HERE.

Don’t feel limited by our schedule! Volunteer for our candidates any day of the week as your schedule permits.

At a recent phone bank for Crystal Hudson, I got a supporter on my first call. Its a true thrill and well worth the effort!

In Solidarity,
Jared Arader, LID President
