2022 LID Questionnaire Response

What is your current position/law practice?  If you are presently a judge, what did you do prior to becoming a judge?

I am the principal law clerk to Justice Devin Cohen in Kings Supreme Court.

Why are you qualified to be a judge?

I believe that, like all those who occupy positions of authority in our government, judges must be first and foremost public servants.  Their vocation is to serve people, organizations, etc., by helping them solve disputes that, without judicial intervention, cannot be solved.  I find personal joy and fulfillment in this act of service.

I have demonstrated my commitment to public service all of my life.  Most recently, I have served my community through my work with the Independent Neighborhood Democrats, helping them inform our neighbors about local issues and encouraging others to get involved.  I was also one of two lay leaders who helped run All Saints Episcopal Church in Park Slope, and I currently serve on their governing committee.  I also have served my legal profession by volunteering as a mediator and arbitrator in Small Claims Court, and by mentoring a diverse group of law student interns all year round, both for many years.

Additionally, I have been a lawyer for more than 20 years.  I graduated from UCLA School of Law in 2001.  I was in private practice for 14 years, where I managed cases, first-chaired and second-chaired trials and arbitrations, appeared in court for argument and conferences, and drafted court filings.  For the past six and-a-half years, I have been the principal law clerk to Justice Devin Cohen, first in New York City Civil Court, and now in New York State Supreme Court.  As his law clerk, I analyze and conference many cases before they see Justice Cohen, and I brief him on the legal and factual issues for his evaluation.

Please list your current endorsements and judicial screening results.

I have been found qualified by the Kings County Democratic Party Judicial Screening Committee.  I have not yet asked any private person or elected official for their endorsement.  I intend to do so following the endorsement of meetings of local political clubs.

What interventions and resources are required to ensure that all judges and court personnel competently and respectfully serve and work with the LGBTQ community? What steps will you take to secure the necessary resources to implement the interventions?

Recently, Chief Judge Janet DiFiore tasked Jeh Johnson with examining racial bias in the court system.  In October 2020, Mr. Johnson released his report, which included substantive data collection and analysis, as well as recommendations for addressing racial bias.  A similar review concerning bias against the LGBTQ community and recommendations to address that bias  merits consideration.

As I expect such a review would suggest, we should educate and train judges and court personnel to competently and respectfully serve LGBTQ people.  This training could be part of the regular training personnel receive in the first few months of employment.  Certainly, this training could include a broad examination of internal biases, patterns of behavior, and instruction on how to address them.  Specifically, this training should include the proper use of pronouns and honorifics for each person, and well as other terminology that fosters an inclusive and respectful environment.

As a judge, I will work with, and build from, the current efforts by the court system in this regard, such as the Richard C. Failla LGBTQ Commission. I would also institute certain practices for my chambers and courtroom, as described below.

How will you commit to ensuring that preferred pronouns and gender identity are respected in your courtroom and on documents prepared by litigators and the court?

First, I will do my best to exemplify this behavior for the chambers staff and court staff that work with me.  I will respect all persons by using their preferred pronouns and honorifics both in speech and in writing.  I will encourage my clerks to attend continuing legal education classes that provide instruction on LGBT issues, and will attend such classes myself.  Pursuant to the Code of Judicial Conduct and applicable professional and court rules, I also will require attorneys to use another’s preferred pronouns and honorifics orally and in writing.

Will you commit to appearing before the LGBT Bar Association (“LeGal”) judicial screening panel?  Do you understand that this club may rescind your endorsement for failure to appear or receiving a non-qualified rating from the association?

Yes.

2022 LID Questionnaire Response

What makes you different (100 words max)?

I believe what makes me different is the value I place on having integrity and my passion to always try to do right by others. I believe in being a lifelong learner and I also bring a sense of responsibility to fight for those who may lack access. My work in the political/civic spaces that I have been involved in speaks to my belief in advocating for those who don’t have a voice of their own.

Why do you want to represent your neighbors and fellow Brooklynites in the county and state Democratic parties (100 words max)?

I want to represent my neighbors and fellow Brooklynites in the county and state Democratic parties as I see a need for change in county party leadership from leadership that appears exclusive and lacking in transparency to leadership that promotes inclusivity and transparency. The current county party leadership has moved to disenfranchise many and has effectively reduced participation in party affairs by voting to only hold one County Committee meeting every two years instead of two meetings per year, and also to strengthen and consolidate the power of the Executive Committee by defaulting votes of the larger County Committee body to District Leaders if no vote or proxy is submitted.

What difference will you make for your community (100 words max)?

Having been a resident of the 43rd Assembly District for over 20 years, I have seen and experienced some of the issues that have plagued family, friends, and neighbors within the district. Outside of the formal duties of a District Leader/State Committee representative which includes voting on Executive Committee matters, voting at the State Convention, hosting judicial forums, and conducting BOE related duties, I also intend to use the position to leverage relationships to help fight issues of food insecurity, gun violence, and unfair housing practices that affect residents of the district disproportionately.

What is your vision for a more open and transparent county party organization (100 words max)?

My vision for a more open and transparent county party calls for a party where there is room for dissent without being shut out from the political process by party leadership. I also envision a county party where meetings are not held in secret to change county party rules, with no advanced notice given to the County Committee preventing members from voicing their opinions.

How can a District Leader/State Committee Member best support the LGBTQ community (100 words max)?

A District Leader/State Committee Member could best support the LGBTQ community by advocating for inclusivity across the party, and by educating and supporting their constituency about LGBTQ issues as well. District Leader/State Committee Members could also ensure and help to hold the party accountable to use language and promote policy that doesn’t alienate members of the LGBTQ community. An example of this would be to support the policy of having non-gendered County Committee seats, therefore allowing persons who may consider themselves TGNCNB to run without feeling marginalized.

How will you commit to actively working to provide more power and autonomy to the members of the County Committee (100 words max)?

I would vote to reinstate two meetings per year of the County Committee, I would work to establish an ADC within the 43rd Assembly District to help give an official voice to the County Committee members within the 43rd Assembly District, and I would also vote to allow County Committee members to bring forth resolutions before the members of the County Committee without having to present them to a hand-picked subcommittee put together by the party Chair which could in effect prevent the larger County Committee body from ever hearing the resolution.

How will you oppose efforts to transfer county committee powers to the executive committee (district leaders) (100 words max)?

I would vote to oppose efforts to transfer the County Committee powers to the Executive Committee by voting to reverse the practice of having District Leaders automatically assume the votes of County Committee members who don’t vote or submit a proxy. By allowing votes to default to the District Leaders, it creates the opportunity for abuse as it can result in the appointment of individuals to the County Committee who may not even be aware that they are on the County Committee providing defaulted votes to District Leaders who are in some cases controlled or allied with the county party Chair.

What recommendations would you make to reform the Board of Elections (100 words max)?

Two recommendations that I would make to reform the Board of Elections are:

1- Hiring of professional BOE staff that is merit based similar to most civil service titles, rather than the hiring of staff based on political affiliations and/or political relationships

2- Reformation of the BOE from being an agency that is bipartisan to an agency that is non-partisan

Do you support reverting the power to “backfill” open county committee seats back to county committee members? (Y/N)
Yes.

Do you commit to developing and participating in community engagement in advance of State Supreme Court nominations by the Executive Committee (eg, public candidate screening forums, community outreach)? (Y/N
Yes.

Will you commit to reasonable attendance at all/most Executive Committee meetings (absent a legitimate reason for not being able to attend, eg, health, child care, travel)? (Y/N)
Yes.

Will you commit to reforming rules to ensure that public notice of executive committee and county committee meetings is provided as far in advance as possible (eg, further than 1-2 weeks)? (Y/N)?  How much time do you think is reasonable?
Yes. For meetings that are not emergent or that time permits 3-4 weeks.

Will you commit to rules reform limiting the use of proxy voting by district leaders? (Y/N)
Yes.

If endorsed, do you commit to using LID’s full logo (will be provided) and full name on all materials and other places where you list endorsees (with the exception of lists of specific organizations (unions, etc) or elected officials)? (Y/N)
Yes.

Do you commit to using inclusive and gender-neutral language in press releases and other announcements (e.g., “the people of the..” instead of “the men and women of the…”)(Y/N)
Yes.

2022 LID Questionnaire Response

What makes you different (100 words max)?

As a parent and project manager, I bring a unique blend of life and professional experiences. I've experienced hardships, which have led me to a place of empathy and understanding for all.

As a graduate of CUNY Queens College, I majored in Political Science, and was able to understand our political systems and how they have the ability to uplift our communities.

These experiences have given me a blend of pragmatism and optimism that has come to define and differentiate me.

Why do you want to represent your neighbors and fellow Brooklynites in the county and state Democratic parties (100 words max)?

I’m running because our neighbors deserve a representative who values accessibility, transparency, as well as accountability. District leaders have the responsibility to positively influence policies at local levels that are in the best interest of our community. They should welcome participation and not maintain the practice of exclusionary politics. As a parent and person who lives in this neighborhood, I know we deserve better. That’s why I want to represent my neighbors and fellow Brooklynites.

What difference will you make for your community (100 words max)?

The difference I’d like to make for the community would be to work with neighbors who are interested in joining the main body of the county committee. I would establish an Assembly District Committee, and work with other members to have judicial forums to ensure we know who the judges on the ballot will be. This would be done while championing the neighborhood and working to build a stronger party for all.

What is your vision for a more open and transparent county party organization (100 words max)?

My vision for a more open and transparent party organization involves holding regularly scheduled County Committee Meetings, having a 30 day notice before the meetings, and having them in areas that are ADA compliant and accessible. As well as, have minutes, audio, and video of the meetings be available to all members. This is important because we need more transparency, and we must remove barriers to participation.

I would also like to have the involvement of committees and work to enable the districts to have Assembly District Committees.

How can a District Leader/State Committee Member best support the LGBTQ community (100 words max)?

A District Leader can best support the LGBTQ community by making them feel welcome, and that their experiences and voices are valued.

They can support the LGBTQ community by advocating for more inclusion and make efforts to engage in meaningful outreach to boost involvement.

How will you commit to actively working to provide more power and autonomy to the members of the County Committee (100 words max)?

I will work to provide more power and autonomy to members of the County Committee by advocating for having elected officers who are part of the County Committee, and not made up exclusively of District Leaders. This would also include working to increase participation, so decisions are made from the bottom up rather than the top down.

I would advocate for any changes to party rules requiring a vote from the County Members and giving them advanced notice.

How will you oppose efforts to transfer county committee powers to the executive committee (district leaders) (100 words max)?

I will always use the position to advocate for the powers being held where they belong– with the county committee members. This is because I strongly oppose efforts to transfer county committee powers to the executive committee, and I will not be silent about efforts to suppress members rights. I will prioritize working with other DL’s who share this fundamental understanding, and work to persuade executive committee members who do not share this belief.

What recommendations would you make to reform the Board of Elections (100 words max)?

I would recommend making the Board of Elections nonpartisan! The inherently political nature of the Board of Elections leads to the dysfunction we experience, and a non-partisan Board of Elections would be able to better carry out the roles and responsibilities.

BOE employees should be hired based on merit, and not feel pressured to contribute because they owe their employment to an individual or affiliation.

The county parties should have a competitive and transparent process for BOE Commissioners and include the entire Country Committee. This process should be determined through an inclusive process and not top down.

Do you support reverting the power to “backfill” open county committee seats back to county committee members? (Y/N)
Yes

Do you commit to developing and participating in community engagement in advance of State Supreme Court nominations by the Executive Committee (eg, public candidate screening forums, community outreach)? (Y/N)
YES!

Will you commit to reasonable attendance at all/most Executive Committee meetings (absent a legitimate reason for not being able to attend, eg, health, child care, travel)? (Y/N)
YES!

Will you commit to reforming rules to ensure that public notice of executive committee and county committee meetings is provided as far in advance as possible (eg, further than 1-2 weeks)? (Y/N)?  How much time do you think is reasonable?
Yes, I think a 4 week notice is reasonable because many members have to make arrangements in order to attend.

Will you commit to rules reform limiting the use of proxy voting by district leaders? (Y/N)
YES

If endorsed, do you commit to using LID’s full logo (will be provided) and full name on all materials and other places where you list endorsees (with the exception of lists of specific organizations (unions, etc) or elected officials)? (Y/N)
Yes

Do you commit to using inclusive and gender-neutral language in press releases and other announcements (e.g., “the people of the..” instead of “the men and women of the…”)(Y/N)
Yes, inclusivity matters and is extremely important for making everyone feel welcomed.

2022 LID Questionnaire Response

What makes you different (100 words max)?

I am the son of immigrants and the first Black District leader for the 50th assembly district. I have had the opportunity of growing up and representing the community that has given me so much. My experience as a neighbor, resident, friend, and community leader has provided me with a unique perspective on how I approach issues within my community. It has been a long time since any North Brooklyn representative could say that they bring the perspective of a second generation American. This community is changing. It has been growing in diversity for many years, and I am proud to be one of the new faces of that diversity reflected in the local elected leaders. And I will bring my perspective to the position as I work to promote and celebrate all types of diversity in North Brooklyn.

Why do you want to represent your neighbors and fellow Brooklynites in the county and state Democratic parties (100 words max)?

It has been my greatest honor to represent the district that I was born and raised in and work to expand voter participation in Kings County. I want to work with my neighbors in amplifying the needs and concerns of our residents and neighbors. Over these last few years, Party leadership has disenfranchised thousands of voters across Brooklyn, and I want to help rectify that and create a more transparent and inclusive party that works for and is directed by the people I want to contribute to an experience inspires other to feel comfortable to speak their minds in spaces that welcome political debate.

What difference will you make for your community (100 words max)?

I want to organize public forums to help spread important policy information while at the same time being civically engaged in neighborhood matters. I have seen the success of many progressive causes thanks to constituencies being politically engaged and active.

What is your vision for a more open and transparent county party organization (100 words max)?

I would like to see the Kings County Democratic Party come together, everyday Democratic voters meeting with their neighbors to increase the sense of political efficacy in our communities. So many of our neighbors choose not to participate because of a previous bad experience or an expectation that nothing will happen if they get involved. It’s important that we address those concerns in a public open space where people can ask their questions and get some sort of answers, something to use as a starting point for building trust.

How can a District Leader/State Committee Member best support the LGBTQ community (100 words max)?

LGBTQ rights are human rights, so when someone from the LGBTQ community is discriminated against or threatened at the workplace or on the street, it is our responsibility to stand with them and speak up against hate and support our neighbors. While we may not be able to introduce legislation to combat discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, it’s important that we support candidates who can and who will work diligently against discrimination and hate. We have an obligation to take action at the local level to create these safe spaces and make a difference by sharing resources that protect the LGBTQ community.

How will you commit to actively working to provide more power and autonomy to the members of the County Committee (100 words max)?

We have witnessed power grabs from county leadership to cement their political aspirations, whether in an election or rules change. All of these public meetings and forums have done nothing but solidify this image of county committee engagement as a secondary requirement in the Kings County Democratic Party. I am committed to changing that. I believe in the saying “if you build it they will come.” I am committed to organizing public forums to hear the concerns of county committee members boroughwide to help amplify their voices to the county leadership. I am committed to working my hardest to reverse the recent rules change to give our county committee members a voice to be heard and help direct our Democratic Party the right way.

How will you oppose efforts to transfer county committee powers to the executive committee (district leaders) (100 words max)?

We have a responsibility to our constituency and to our county committee members. I do not plan on voting on any rules change or resolution that would silence the voices of my constituencies and our county committee members. We work for the people, it isn’t the other way around.

What recommendations would you make to reform the Board of Elections (100 words max)?

I think it starts with transparency and accountability. We have seen time and time again the BOE failing its voters in Brooklyn and across the city. This failure falls on the shoulders of those at the top that fail to address the needs of our BOE staff and ultimately our constituents. Most BOE workers are overworked and underpaid and we need to do more to address that. That starts with better training and livable wages, while also shedding light on the decision-making structure. There should be no reason why every year we experience the same issues we’ve addressed in years prior.

Do you support reverting the power to “backfill” open county committee seats back to county committee members? (Y/N)
Yes

Do you commit to developing and participating in community engagement in advance of State Supreme Court nominations by the Executive Committee (eg, public candidate screening forums, community outreach)? (Y/N)
Yes

Will you commit to reasonable attendance at all/most Executive Committee meetings (absent a legitimate reason for not being able to attend, eg, health, child care, travel)? (Y/N)
Yes

Will you commit to reforming rules to ensure that public notice of executive committee and county committee meetings is provided as far in advance as possible (eg, further than 1-2 weeks)? (Y/N)? How much time do you think is reasonable? Yes

Will you commit to rules reform limiting the use of proxy voting by district leaders? (Y/N)

2022 LID Questionnaire Response

What makes you different (100 words max)?

I believe that growing up and living my whole life in the 50th Assembly District has offered me a rich understanding and unique perspective on the issues that the district faces. Growing up in the 50th Assembly District, an area that has experienced tremendous change over the past few decades, has offered me with first hand knowledge of the long-standing issues within our community, such as reckless development practices, the need for affordable housing, environmental injustices, and lack of green space.

My personal connection to the district and experience in local government inform my work as District Leader.

Why do you want to represent your neighbors and fellow Brooklynites in the county and state Democratic parties (100 words max)?

I am running for re-election as District Leader for the 50th Assembly District in order to continue the work that we have done together over the past term of creating a Brooklyn Democratic Party that we can all be proud of. Over the past term, we have had tremendous success in moving the needle towards a Brooklyn Democratic Party that is more transparent and truly inclusive of all. I believe that now is the time to seize on that momentum and continue to break down barriers to access and engagement within the party.

What difference will you make for your community (100 words max)?

If re-elected, I will continue to create avenues for AD 50 residents to become involved in the democratic process and Brooklyn Democratic Party, while also pushing the KCDC to adopt measures to further inclusion and transparency.

Some of the ways in which I will continue to spur engagement in my district include: recruiting new poll workers, County Committee members, and Judicial Delegates; hosting voter registration drives; and co-hosting judicial candidate forums. I will also continue to use the bully pulpit of the office to echo residents and fellow electeds’ demands for increased open space, tenant protections, and environmental justice.

What is your vision for a more open and transparent county party organization (100 words max)?

My vision for a more open and transparent county party organization is one where any one – regardless of race, religion, zip code, gender identity etc. – has equal opportunity to participate.

Currently, there are many barriers to participating in the party organization. For example, meetings are often held in inaccessible locations. I believe there are simple measures the party can take today to welcome new members from across the borough, such as hosting meetings in central locations.

In terms of transparency, I believe it is imperative that leadership is transparent about party business, particularly in regards to the party’s finances and staffing.

How can a District Leader/State Committee Member best support the LGBTQ community (100 words max)?

I believe a District Leader can best support the LGBTQ community by supporting measures for the full inclusion of LGBTQ and TGNCNB (transgender, gender non-conforming and non-binary) Brooklynites within the party and by fighting to ensure that efforts at inclusion center the most impacted.

This past term, we celebrated a rules change allowing TGNCNB individuals to openly serve on County Committee. While this rules change was historic, the arduous process and lack of inclusion of LGBTQ-identified District Leaders and community members in The Gender Task Force, was highly concerning and underscored that we have a lot more work to do.

How will you commit to actively working to provide more power and autonomy to the members of the County Committee (100 words max)?

If re-elected, I will fight for rules reforms similar to those that passed at the County Committee meeting in December 2020. These reforms fundamentally altered the governance of the Party to make it more transparent and responsive to CC members. Unfortunately, following passage, the newly passed reforms were invalidated by Party leadership. I was vehemently supportive of the reform rules passed in 2020, and in the upcoming term, I will continue to fight for rules that will empower County Committee members.

In addition, I will continue to recruit as many County Committee members as possible within AD 50.

How will you oppose efforts to transfer county committee powers to the executive committee (district leaders) (100 words max)?

I will oppose efforts to transfer county committee powers to the executive committee by voting against any efforts to do this and spearheading efforts to enfranchise County Committee members. I believe we can bring power into the hands of County Committee members through rules changes and by enacting simple measures to make the party more accessible. For example: hosting in-person meetings in locations accessible to public transportation and providing more language access options.

What recommendations would you make to reform the Board of Elections (100 words max)?

I believe we need top-to-bottom reform of the Board of Elections. At present, the Board’s structure and selection process for leadership makes it unaccountable to the public, and enables political patronage and administrative incompetence. I believe structural changes must be made in order for the agency to work effectively and best serve New York voters.

Some of the changes that I believe should be explored include: making the agency bi-partisan, so as to root our politically motivated decision making; measures to prohibit patronage – staffing decisions should prioritize merit and professionalism; and a revision of the Borough Commissioner appointment process.

Do you support reverting the power to “backfill” open county committee seats back to county committee members? (Y/N)
Yes.

Do you commit to developing and participating in community engagement in advance of State Supreme Court nominations by the Executive Committee (eg, public candidate screening forums, community outreach)? (Y/N)

Yes. I would be interested in hearing from County Committee members directly as to what they think is an appropriate amount of time for notice of a meeting; personally, I believe a month’s notice would be more reasonable.

I’ve lived in the 54th AD my entire life and have engaged in my community through multiple facets. However, here are ways I’ve engaged in the last 5 years as it relates to my interest and local political engagement:

  • Executive Member of Brooklyn Community Board 4

  • Volunteer for local campaigns in the district

  • Support voter registration initiatives and helping increase voter registration and awareness in the community

  • Support census outreach initiatives and helping increase the completions of censuses in the community

  • Volunteer at community schools in the district to support where needed

Why do you want to represent your neighbors and fellow Brooklynites in the county and state Democratic parties (100 words max)?

  • Today, I'm running for District Leader because I want to continue serving my community in a volunteer capacity in which I can make a big impact on the Democratic Party in our community.

  • I want to increase the community engagement in local politics within my community. Provide education, awareness, and resources that can be useful to enhancing their quality of life.

What difference will you make for your community (100 words max)?

  • If elected, I want to be the connector between the community and local politics. I plan to hold forums, establish an ADC, and work with paid elected officials to fulfill community needs. .

What is your vision for a more open and transparent county party organization (100 words max)?

I’m committed to helping shape the party to become a more open and transparent county party organization. Some ways I plan on doing that are as follows.

County Committee Meeting Announcements and Operations: As a previous county committee member I have directly experienced how the current setup has limited the involvement of members. Updating the processes will help the engagement and operations during meetings.

Assembly District Committees (ADCs): There should be an ADC in every AD. However, that is not the case in my AD. There needs to be a push to ensure these committees are established. I will push this platform to ensure one is in my AD and all ADs to activate party members and organize locally.

Financial Oversight: KCDCC receives a large amount of donations. The details on the KCDCC expenditures should be reviewed so the Party knows how money is being spent. These funds can be used for various initiatives. Therefore, oversight of these funds are needed to ensure appropriate spending and give members the opportunity to address matters.

How can a District Leader/State Committee Member best support the LGBTQ community (100 words max)?

  • District Leader/State Committee Member can support the LGBTQ community in various ways. Some ways include:

    • Recruiting members who are a part of the LGBTQ community to join County Committee.

    • Working to fight for a more inclusive District Leader and executive body. Anyone should be able to run for District leader. Not just individuals who identify as “male” or “female.”

    • Organizing in their committees regarding issues that impact the LGBTQ community.

How will you commit to actively working to provide more power and autonomy to the members of the County Committee (100 words max)?

One item I will work on to provide more power and autonomy to the members of the County Committee is reforming the proxy policy.

  • Party rules should be revised to limit how many proxy votes each County Committee member can hold.

  • Members should be  notified about any scheduled votes in advance to a meeting. This notice should allow proxy givers to provide voting instructions to their proxy holders..

How will you oppose efforts to transfer county committee powers to the executive committee (district leaders) (100 words max)?

  • By working with county committee members and being transparent with county committee members. Staying true to the values I uphold and objecting to anything that goes against a more inclusive and equity Democratic Party.

What recommendations would you make to reform the Board of Elections (100 words max)?

  • I would ensure that there is more transparency and oversight on election equipment and processes.

  • There should also be more oversight on vendor selection.

2022 LID Questionnaire Response

What makes you different (100 words max)

What makes me different is that I see the role as a way to be a servant leader to my community. I believe there are District Leaders who see the role as a way to accumulate power or to gain proximity to power. I do not care about any of that. I do not expect or want to gain notoriety from holding the position. I do not see the role as a way to run for higher office. In fact, I do not currently want to run for higher office.

Why do you want to represent your neighbors and fellow Brooklynites in the county and state Democratic parties (100 words max)?

I want to represent my neighbors because I do not believe my neighbors have had true representation; There has not been a competitive District Leader race in my assembly district for many years. Because of this, the race is not usually on the ballot and has absolutely no visibility. Therefore the current DLs are not truly accountable to the people they purport to represent. I want to represent my neighbors because I know I have the unwavering values transparency, accountability, and inclusion and want to bring more of those values to the Executive Committee.

What difference will you make for your community (100 words max)?

One specific difference I would like to make in my community is the formation of an ADC. I believe ADCs are important because they amplify the different political views in the community. They make it easier to mobilize around community  issues. Iit’s important for all ADs to have ADCs, especially now that the voices of County Committee members have been silenced. Having an amplified and organized voice could mitigate some of those measures taken last November. Right now, because the information is not readily available, it’s not easy to organize as individual county committee members. I’d like to change that.

What is your vision for a more open and transparent county party organization (100 words max)?

Ideally, meetings and decision making should be public; any democrat should have the right and the knowledge to attend. There should be a public accounting of every decision that was made. All Democrats, regardless of race, gender identity, sexual orientation, or disability should be brought into the process, not excluded.  no one should have to mis-gender  themselves to participate. This can be achieved by recruiting reform-minded count committee members, as well as District Leaders. Party rules can then be changed to reflect all Brooklyn Democrats and not just those in power.

How can a District Leader/State Committee Member best support the LGBTQ community (100 words max)?

As DL, I plan to fight for rules that remove barriers to participating in the party based on gender identity.I plan to advocate for the use of gender inclusive language in all rules and party platforms (if the party ever decides to adopt one. Actively recruiting members of the LGBTQIA+ Community to increase representation on County committee is another measure I think is extremely important.

How will you commit to actively working to provide more power and autonomy to the members of the County Committee (100 words max)?

Proxy reform is important. Proxies should not be able to be gathered by those in power by appointed county committee members to control a democratic process. I am also committed to returning powers to CC members that they once had. I will work to recruit County Committee Members all over Brooklyn, in collaboration with other reform district leaders as sustainable reform cannot happen without a majority of reformers at both the Ex-Co and County Committee Member level.

How will you oppose efforts to transfer county committee powers to the executive committee (district leaders) (100 words max)?

I can promise that any proposed rules changes that take away powers from County Committee Members will elicit a no vote from me. Party rules can be used to delay inappropriate votes. In some cases, the media can be leveraged as a way to focus attention on what’s happening. However, in order to stop un-democratic practices and reinstate the powers of CCMs, it is very important that a reform majority is held at the Ex-Co and CCM levels. Considering long term sustainability of the reform movement must be a consideration in any strategy to reform County Party.

What recommendations would you make to reform the Board of Elections (100 words max)?

The BOE should have one (not 10) appointed leader with a term of 6 years like the leader of the COIB. There should not be 10 leaders with certain political affiliations. The BOE should be made up of civil servants with clearly defined roles and hiring should be based on merit. Granted, the civil service system has its own problems but I believe it is the most efficient path to take to civilianize the agency.

Do you support reverting the power to “backfill” open county committee seats back to county committee members? (Y/N)
Absolutely, yes.

Do you commit to developing and participating in community engagement in advance of State Supreme Court nominations by the Executive Committee (eg, public candidate screening forums, community outreach)? (Y/N)
Absolutely, yes.

Will you commit to reasonable attendance at all/most Executive Committee meetings (absent a legitimate reason for not being able to attend, eg, health, child care, travel)? (Y/N)
Absolutely, yes.

Will you commit to reforming rules to ensure that public notice of executive committee and county committee meetings is provided as far in advance as possible (eg, further than 1-2 weeks)? (Y/N)?  How much time do you think is reasonable?
Yes. I believe having meetings with predictable regularity is the most reasonable. For example, I am a member of an organization where the monthly membership meeting is the second Saturday of the month. This meeting schedule is embedded into our governing documents. I see no reason why this cannot also be instituted in the County Committee. Two weeks is the bare minimum of when a meeting should be announced. 3 - 4 weeks should be the standard.

Will you commit to rules reform limiting the use of proxy voting by district leaders? (Y/N)
Absolutely, yes.

If endorsed, do you commit to using LID’s full logo (will be provided) and full name on all materials and other places where you list endorsees (with the exception of lists of specific organizations (unions, etc) or elected officials)? (Y/N)
Absolutely, yes.

Do you commit to using inclusive and gender-neutral language in press releases and other announcements (e.g., “the people of the..” instead of “the men and women of the…”)(Y/N)
Absolutely, yes.

2022 LID Questionnaire Response

What makes you different?

I have the proven leadership and record that I am running on that has made a difference in the 57th Assembly District. Having experience is a sort after quality that many candidates don't have I'm the only candidate running that is the President of a block association. I'm the only candidate in the 57th that is an educator. I'm the only candidate that is a small business owner. I'm the only candidate that has started a neighborhood watch patrol in the 57th as a teenager. I'm the only candidate who held a press conference to fight against a noose hanging in Ft. Greene Park. I'm the only candidate that sponsored Movie Nights in the Park for the residents of Crown Heights. I'm the only candidate who formed a local Democratic Club for the district. I'm the only candidate who held monthly community meetings for all residents of the 57th while elected. I'm the only candidate that fought to save Associated Supermarket in Crown Heights. I'm the only candidate that organized a press conference with neighbors to push back when the Parks Dept padlocked our neighborhood Dog Run.

Please read https://www.brooklynpaper.com/fort-greeners-and-their-pups-rally-to-save-local-dog-run/

Also, I am the only candidate in this race that have been endorsed by LID in the past.

Why do you want to represent your neighbors and your fellow Brooklynites in the County and the State Democratic Party?

I want to represent my neighbors and Brooklynites because we need someone who will listen, be inclusive of all viewpoints, build a better Party for all, unify and create avenues of collective community work. I will be the District Leader who will proudly stand up for LGTBQ rights and strongly denounce any form of hate towards the LGTBQ community. In 2013, my brother-in-law Mark Carson was shot in the head, in the Village after a man asked him if he was gay and when he responded yes, he was killed in cold blood, for everyone to see. I understand the need to constantly fight for protection for members of the LGTBQ community and will stand up for LGTBQ Supportive housing for people and seniors.

What difference will you make for your community?

I will bring neighborhood issues to the forefront in major ways to bring awareness and solutions to make a better neighborhood, such as my advocacy for Apolline's Garden, a name for an initiative that I created to honor the 3 month old baby, that was killed by a speeding car, traveling in the wrong direction in a slip lane in Ft. Greene/Clinton Hill.

Please read: https://nyc.streetsblog.org/2022/01/31/opinion-saving-childrens-lives-should-not-be-open-to-debate/

I am also making a difference by being the founder and President of my Block Association as a way to engage neighborhood to care about their block and fulfilling their civic duties and more.

What is your vision for a more open and transparent County party organization?

Advocating to have all judicial candidate profiles published in the NYC Voter's Guide, I will advocate for the County Committee Members to meet more than annually, however, I will organize for County Committee members to meet with me, as District Leader, once a month and support the disclosure of the Party's finances.

How can a District Leader/State Committee Member best support the LGTBQ community?

I have been on the front lines, over the years by supporting Lambda events, attending and speaking at Lambda meetings and marching for PRIDE in Brooklyn. (I still have my pics) smile. Also, my District Leader position will be used as a voice of influence to encourage legislative to craft more laws to protect the LGTBQ community and I will fight to help increase funding for local LGTBQ organizations

How will you commit to actively working to provide more power and autonomy to the members of the County Committee?

More meetings for the County Committee, actively engage the County Committee Members in local issues that affect the quality of life in the 57th Assembly District. As District Leader, I will arrange for the County Committee members of the 57th to have our own meetings with the County Leader and yes, I am confident that I will be successful in making it happen.

How will you oppose efforts to transfer County Committee power to the Executive Committee members?

By keeping this issue on the forefront of County conversation.

What recommendations would you make to reform the Board of Elections?

As a former District Leader, I know first hand that the Board of Elections need updated infrastructure. I will recommend that the voter registration applications are safely put in a computer system by a competent data entry monitor then double checked by a second staffer. Currently, voter registration applications are thrown in an open box that sits the a corner. Shameful.

My vision would be to have a Dems Leader that would bring together District Leaders to at least be educated on what our party can do together.
