District 34 - Jennifer Gutierrez

Neighborhoods:
Williamsburg, Bushwick, Ridgewood

What’s At Stake:
North Brooklyn has a strong and constantly growing queer community made up of artists, gig workers, professionals, sex workers and more.  The district is home to much of Brooklyn’s nightlife.  But the district also faces fast-paced gentrification and over-development that threatens to destroy its diverse character, which includes a large population of hard-working Latino families.  The Council Member for this district must be a friend to both the LGBTQ communities, nightlife and must best represent the working and middle-class residents who define the area.

About Jen:
Jen is a longtime advocate and activist and has worked for the current city council member, Antonio Reynoso, throughout his tenure.  As the daughter of Columbian immigrants, she knows and understands the struggles and realities faced by a large population of the district.  As a longtime friend to the LGBTQ community, Jen also understands the struggles faced by gig-workers, sex workers and nightlife communities.

By the issues:
Central to Jen’s campaign is affordable housing, a key concern in North Brooklyn.  In a district whose small businesses have been devastated by COVID, Jen’s campaign promises to ensure small business relief and other COVID recovery measures such as funding for community health centers, public banking and a robust jobs program.  Jen’s campaign also understands the complex transportation issues faced by the district (have you ever tried to get from Happy Fun Hideaway to Metropolitan Bar?  Not so easy…) and would advocate for municipal control of the MTA, protected bike lanes and dedicated busways.  Read more about Jen’s platform HERE.
