#CloseTheCamps is an LGBTQ Issue
LID was present to bear witness this past Friday at the #LightsForLiberty rally in Foley Square as progressives from all over NYC gathered to protest the Trump regime’s abhorrent human rights atrocities on the US border.
Two back-to-back rallies brought together approximately 2000 New Yorkers, who expressed their collective outrage and sadness toward Trump’s imprisonment of undocumented immigrants. Speakers included a wide range of groups, including House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler (LID 2019 Annual Event keynote speaker) and ACT-UP, the legendary LGBTQ activist group which read the names of persons living with HIV who have died in ICE custody.
LID was joined by dozens of labor, religious and political groups, including our friends at the New Kings Democrats and the Association of Legal Aid Attorneys, lead by LID Board Member Jared Trujillo. Council Member Brad Lander and District Leader Josue Pierre (LID Board Member) were also present.
“Call your legislators. Tell them that we won’t stand for this anymore” said LID President Jared Arader, who spoke with VP Nick Tamborra at the first rally. “These children have been traumatized by the Trump administration in ways that will affect them for the rest of their lives” said Tamborra, a social worker and therapist who works with at-risk youths.
In addition to thousands of parents separated from their children, transgender, gender non-binary and gender-non-conforming migrants are held without access to appropriate facilities and critical services. Call your legislators today.
