LID Stands Strong Against Anti-Queer Remarks by Assemblymember Alec Brook-Krasny

Lambda Independent Democrats of Brooklyn (LID) fiercely denounces the anti-queer, homophobic, transphobic, and ignorant statements Assemblymember Alec Brook-Krasny (Bay Ridge and Coney Island) made, first at a Community Board Meeting on June 15, 2023 and then reiterated on social media. It is disgraceful to see parts of our home borough of Brooklyn, long a haven for LGBTQIA+ people, being represented by someone actively espousing and endorsing harm to our community.

Pride is a celebration of all parts of our beautiful queer community – the joy, love, history, resistance, and endurance. This shouldn’t be hard to understand, but we are in the midst of an ongoing campaign of lies and dishonesty from Republican elected officials and advocates against our rights. LID has already celebrated Pride Month with our 45th anniversary celebration and the Brooklyn Pride March, and we look forward to continuing the celebrations as the month goes on.

It is also depressing (though not surprising from the GOP) to see an elected official fearmonger and lie about transgender athletes. Trans athletes (like all athletes) are simply people who find joy in sport and want to play embracing their full identities. Sports have been a lifeline for many trans young people, and they deserve to play and participate as their full proud selves.

Assemblymember Brook-Krasny’s statement is a sad reminder that even here in Brooklyn, we are not immune from the homophobia and transphobia that we see rearing their head nationwide. LID was proud to campaign hard for his Democratic opponent in 2022, and while we came up just a few points short in a hard year for Democrats in southern Brooklyn, we look forward to redoubling our efforts to unseat him in 2022. Brooklyn deserves to be represented by elected officials who fully support and embrace our LGBTQIA+ community and LID looks forward to continuing to make Brooklyn a more safe, affirming, and welcoming place for all of us.
