Jacqui Painter
District 38: Jacqui Painter
Neighborhoods:
Red Hook, South Slope, Sunset Park
What’s at stake:
District 38 is a waterfront community made up of many immigrants, public housing residents, working families, and essential workers. ICE raids are the exception, not the norm. At the heart of concern in the district is the development of Industry City and the neighborhood’s waterfront and what that means for the many hard-working families and middle class people in the area. Rapid development also threatens to displace the immigrants, students, climate activists and more who make the community vibrant and diverse.
Who is Jacqui:
Jacqui is a Red Hook native and community activist who has done the work to advance progressive priorities. Jacqui is the founder of Red Hook Relief, a local mutual aid organization that has provided critical support to Red Hook’s local residents throughout the COVID-19 crisis. She has been working as an organizer with Red Hook’s senior residents of the NYCHA Red Hook Houses- Brooklyn’s largest public housing development- for the past four years and tirelessly advocates for better conditions. Painter believes in continuing the fight for our vulnerable working people, families, immigrants, and youth by ensuring a fair and just recovery that prioritizes people over profit.
By the issues:
Jacqui’s campaign is built on climate justice - as a waterfront neighborhood, the 38th district is particularly exposed to the devastations of global climate change, and is in jeopardy of destruction with every impending superstorm. Gentrification and displacement is a reality in the area, and Jacqui is dedicated to protecting rent stabilization, guaranteed affordable housing and a citywide income tax credit for renters. Additionally, Jacqui has promised to fight to protect NYCHA residents, work she is already doing with Red Hook Relief. Read more about Jacqui’s platform HERE.
